Is Diwali a public holiday in the UAE?

No. Diwali is not on the official list of UAE public holidays. Offices, banks and government services work as normal.

In 2026 this matters less than usual. The main day, 8 November, is a Sunday, and Sunday is part of the UAE weekend. If you want Dhanteras or Bhai Dooj off, you will usually need to use annual leave. Some private employers give a day off as a goodwill gesture. If you run a company, our guide to UAE labour law for new employers explains how leave and contracts work.

Many Indian curriculum schools close for a few days around Diwali. Each school sets this in its own calendar. In 2025, several Indian schools in the UAE announced breaks of up to five days. For 2026, check your school's circular.

Where to celebrate Diwali in Dubai

Al Seef and the Noor festival

Al Seef, on Dubai Creek, has hosted Noor: Festival of Lights for the past two years. It brings free music, dance, storytelling and rangoli workshops, with a fireworks show over the Creek. One local listing reports Noor on 6 to 8 November 2026, but this was not on an official page when we checked. The nearest Metro station is BurJuman.

Meena Bazaar, Bur Dubai

Meena Bazaar is the old shopping street in Bur Dubai. In Diwali week it fills with lights, sweet shops, diyas (small clay lamps), saris and kurtas. It gets very busy in the evenings. Al Fahidi Metro station on the Green Line is a short walk away.

The Hindu temple in Jebel Ali

The Hindu temple in Jebel Ali opened in October 2022 in the Worship Village, next to the Gurudwara and several churches. The main Shiva temple moved there from Bur Dubai in January 2024. Reports say the Krishna temple in Bur Dubai still opens in its old spot. On Diwali night, expect long queues.

The temple has used QR-code bookings at busy times through its official website, hindutempledubai.com. When we checked on 12 October 2026, the site showed only a holding page. Check it again a few days before you go. The nearest Metro stations are Energy and Ibn Battuta on the Red Line, then a short taxi ride.

Global Village

Global Village reopens for Season 31 on 14 October 2026. The India pavilion is one of the biggest in the park. In past years the park held Diwali fireworks and stage shows. Season 31 ticket prices were not published when we checked.

Gold-buying season: Dhanteras and the Gold Souk

Dhanteras, on Friday 6 November 2026, is the big day for buying gold. The Gold Souk in Deira and the jewellers across the city get very busy that week. Gold Souq Metro station on the Green Line is close by.

In 2025, Dubai jewellers ran Diwali offers with lower making charges and raffles for gold coins and bars, as Gulf News reported. The 2026 offers were not announced when we checked. Gold prices change every day, so compare the rate per gram in two or three shops before you buy.

10 tips for Diwali in Dubai

1. Book the temple visit early

Diwali night is the busiest night of the year at the Jebel Ali temple. Go on a weekday morning that week if you can, and book through the temple's own website when bookings open.

2. Dress modestly at the temple

Cover your shoulders and knees. This applies to men and women. You remove your shoes before the prayer hall. Our guide to what to wear in Dubai covers other places too.

3. Take the Metro to Bur Dubai and Deira

Parking near Meena Bazaar, Al Seef and the Gold Souk is hard in Diwali week. Use the Dubai Metro to BurJuman, Al Fahidi or Gold Souq, and pay with a nol card.

4. Do not set off your own fireworks

Private fireworks are illegal in the UAE. Fireworks count as explosives under Federal Decree-Law No. 17 of 2019. Selling or bringing them in without a licence can mean at least one year in jail, a fine of at least AED 100,000, or both. Enjoy the official shows instead.

5. Arrive early for the fireworks

The free Al Seef show draws big crowds. Get there at least an hour before the start, and agree a meeting point with your group in case phones stop working well in the crowd.

6. Light diyas safely at home

Oil lamps and candles are part of Diwali. Keep them away from curtains and balconies with wind, and never leave them burning when you go out. Electric diyas and fairy lights are a safe choice in flats.

7. Check before you decorate

Some buildings have rules on balcony lights and decorations. Ask your building management before you hang anything outside.

8. Bring sweets if you are invited

If an Indian friend or colleague invites you home, a box of mithai (Indian sweets) or dry fruits is a kind gift. Wish them "Happy Diwali". Take your shoes off at the door if the family does.

9. Keep the gold receipt

Ask for an itemised receipt that shows the gold weight, the karat and the making charge. Keep it for resale and for any warranty on stones.

10. Plan a family evening out

Children love the lights and the fireworks. Pick one show, eat early and leave before the crowd does. A short, happy evening beats a long, tired one.
